My moving image works are experimental explorations of abstraction and representation in film. They extend my existing practice by bringing different media together within a time-based format. Filmed footage is layered with sketches, creative coding in Processing and sound, allowing different visual and temporal languages to intersect. Moving between conscious construction and intuitive process, the works explore a broad range of concerns, from sustainability and environmental change to patterns, rhythms and perception.
Lichen Archive developed during the Salzburg Summer Academy from my photographic exploration of lichen as a living archive — an organism that records time, weather and environmental change through its growth. Beginning with these images, the moving image work gradually expanded into three interconnected sections: Body Rhythms, Thought Patterns and System Rules. Layering lichen photography, drawing, animation, filmed footage and sound, the work moves from organic patterns and bodily rhythms towards human thought processes and the systems that structure and regulate them.
Transition Field is an experimental moving image work exploring environmental instability, adaptation and our changing relationship with the natural world. Developed from my experience of recurring flooding and drought, the work combines filmed landscapes, found footage, drawing, creative coding and sound. Moving between abstraction and representation, organic patterns and constructed systems, the film unfolds through shifting rhythms of pressure, disruption and release, while reflecting on ecological change, consumption and the possibility of finding new ways to live within an increasingly unstable environment.
